Thought I'd find the correct box after a week and dont fancy paying just under £900 to find out its wrong box again most of the ones I been chaseing £500 or lower are the earlier boxes anyone know why these are so damded expensive and rare to find ??????????

Because the prop shafts were faulty and leaked oil consequently if not found in time the gearbox went bang.
This has increased the demand.
As stated you can get your old box rebuilt. Try some places locally to you although there are national companies advertising but I expect it will be around £800 :(
What we need is a conversion kit anyone ? lol

to be honest i thought all g engine gear boxes was the same and all m engine gear boxes was the same

The gearbox changed in 2005/6 for the VVT. The total length is shorter and the shift mechanism is also different and mounted differently to the gearbox.
I know I had enough grief due to the prop shaft leak problem. :(
Fortunately my box was still ok but it was £200 for a new prop!!

HI did not have any oil leaks from prop or anywhere else , just changed down for a roundabout then rattle started in 3rd gear, got it home to find bottom level plug loose tightened it back up and topped up the box with less than 200 mlllilitres of oil to find rattle still there and now whines n 1st/2ng gear and a major rattle in 3rd :( :( Dont think it could be rebuilt, due to the bottom shaft in box can now be pushed up when you stick a screwdriver into drain hole, and guessing from the damage to the bearing carrier a kind of cage affair being in little half moon bits and some flat & stright. Am guessing that its done some damage too gear teeth and poss the gearbox casting also

I tried Cam Suzuki for a box but despite advertising plenty of cars in the year range no gearboxes were available??
They have in the past advertised recon vvt boxes on ebay so maybe they can help??

Well all I can say is as long as there are no holes in your gearbox put it all back together and see if you can get an exchange recon box from some of the nationally advertised companies. Don't worry about the internals that's up to the rebuilders. If you take it locally to get rebuilt that's when you might come across problems? You might be lucky though?
I think someone on here a while back said they were quoted £2000 by Suzuki!!
Maybe someone on here who is local to you and knows their way around Jimny boxes could compare the differences to see if it would be possible to get an earlier box installed?
Problem is if you are thinking of selling is it worth it? Possibly just take the "hit" and sell the car as is on ebay or this forum?
I'm sure the off road enthusiasts on here would have no problem bolting in the earlier box and I might even think that a higher 5th gear on a "road" car might help fuel economy lol.
