Jimny cuts out occasionally was created by Chadd
Hi has anyone had this problem. Every now and then you can be happily driving along and the revs will suddenly go very frantic and wont tick over. It's just a question of pulling over switching off and waiting 5 mins. He is fine then but you never know when it will happen. Always seems to be in hotter weather, But the temperature gauge remains the same. All I have done to him since owning is change the middle and rear exhaust, had the fan and power steering belts and removed the stereo as it keep blowing the fuse. As I am no mechanic I have no idea and don't want to start changing things like o2 sensors for the sake of it. Hes is a 2001 newer engine type and has done 85,000 miles.
Thanks in advance chaps as any thoughts would be very much appreciated.
Ryan.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

This is usually the crankshaft sensor, bertwwn alternator and engine block on a twincam.
Spray it with some air-in-a-can, freeezer spray or similar next time it cuts out and it should restart straight away if it is the crank sensor.

That valve cam cause a lumpy idle, but won't make it cut out and not restart.
There are 2 sensors on a twincam, camshaft and crank.
The cam sensor is dead easy to change, it is high up on the front of the engine, so it can sense a cam wheel. It is so easy to swap out because it very very rarely fails.
The crank sensor looks the same, but isn't an identical part, and is the one that fails because it is much more fiddly to change (an example of Sod's Law in action). They stop working when they get hot.
If you want to take a punt, buy a crank sensor and swap it out. If money is tight and you want a confirmatory diagnosis, wait till it plays up , then cool it down, (if you don't have a suitable aerosol, a fairy liquid bottle of cold water will do)
The crank sensor rarely gives a fault code, probably the ecu thinks that the engine has just stalled and doesn't log anything.
