Sprung a leak! (rear axle) was created by bigblue

Supplied a picture of my leaky rear axle. Taken after a drive so the oil is sprayed all around the wheel, when stationary the oil is just leaking down the tyre onto the ground. Anyone know what usually causes something like this?

hello, leak diff oil or brake fluid?

Check brake fluid level on the reservoir.

Probably diff oil. Like the others said, it's caused by a worn wheel bearing. If you have no/little mechanic experience, read the guide here - www.bigjimny.com/images/documents/changi...ar-wheel-bearing.pdf

Best not to drive it over any significant distance/go offroad with little oil in the diff. It will not run totally dry because of the shape of the diff case. You should be ok to drive to a garage.

It takes me about one-hour to get the half-shaft out of a Jimny that has brake shoes fitted.

Get your replacement Wheel Bearing and Collar (if its an ABS collar then you need to speficy that) from the BigJimny shop then take your busted bearing and half-shaft to your local garage (with your new bearing/collar) and ask them to change them over ... my local garage charges me just £25.

Reassembly takes me about one-hour too!
