O right, usually its the alternator beginning to seize and the belt spinning on the stationary pulley that causes the noise??

That's what happened to mine, but I wouldn't like to say one way or the other if thats a common problem.

A right I thought so. Did you get away without the battery being fried ? Any bulbs pop ???

I was lucky. There was a horrendous smell from under the bonnet one day, and when I stopped to look the battery was bubbling over. Fortunately the battery was ok after being topped up and has been fine ever since. The bulbs all escaped too!

Good stuff mate, you were lucky! I had a customers Subaru in one day and it's alternator was putting out 24 volts!!! The battery was fried and also many bulbs were blown too !!

Thanks for the above, illustrates my dilemma exactly

Think I'll go for....

Adjust belt ( tighter or slacker) - free
Change belt -cheap
Finally..
Change alternator
