Wondering if anyone can help my mate picked his jimny up at weekend we went out for few hours on sun afternoon after a few fairly high water crossings his 4 well drive light started flashing and he lost drive from fr wheels prop was still turning going it to diff just no wheels turning. Has any one sufferd from this or heard anything like it?
The basic problem is that the Freewheeling hubs on the front wheels are not engaging. They are vacuum operated and when they fail to operate, the 4WD light flashes.
Somewhere in the vacuum system there is a problem. A pair of vacuum pipes (two for each wheel) run back from the front wheels to a pair of solenoids hidden below the battery and engine fuse box.
Check that the hoses on each wheel are in place and check the hoses for splits, follow them back to the solenoid as far as you can. Its usually a split/loose pipe.
The solendoids can suffer from dirt and water and there are a pair of tiny filters on them that need cleaning, quite a fiddly task.
If it becomes a regular problem then you can swap them for manual hubs from and SJ, but you will need a spacer ring (about 6mm) to fit them.

The vacum pipes run along the front drivers side radius arms as well and head up towards the floor. I ripped all mine out the other weekend whilst off road.
