I find it works perfectly well, so well I tend to forget it's there doing its stuff.
I very rarely use the hand brake though, unless I have actually parked up (plus the brake lights are not retina burners!).
I am sure it also works facing backwards up hill, when you want to reverse up.

Yes, I would expect it is just using the ABS/TCS sensors to detect wheel movement.

I too have found it very handy. Off road on technical terrain it works great. Often when you've stalled it due to the TCS kicking in.... :o

Also worked great with the caravan on the back when pulling out of the yard as there is a bit of a slope as you go out onto the road.

Hill Hold is a function of the braking system ESP (Electronic Stability Programme)

The ESP does lots of interesting things including things like "Torque up control" to the the ECU to increase engine torque.

For hill hold control, it is related purely to Brake Pedal Release and throttle pedal push. If you pull up to a junction upwards on a hill and do the lazy mans stop of pressing the clutch and holding the car on the brake pedal, then it operates when you RELEASE the brake pedal and transfer your foot to the accelerator. At the moment of brake pedal release it holds for two seconds. The exact words in the workshop manual are:
The vehicle remains stationary at the position for 2 seconds without operation of the accelerator pedal. Operating the accelerator pedal within 2 seconds releases the brake pressure.

A further note states:

When you push and hold the ESP® OFF switch for a while with the transfer lever in “4L” position, it is possible to deactivate the hill hold control system.

Myself and James just perform the test on a random selection of Jimnys on our drive. They held for 2 seconds and released.
