Busta - last couple have done less than 5k each. Trailer is only 380kg. Think I have been unlucky. Sounds like chain slip when setting off under load.

That must be bad luck. But there is definitely a thing I've found with Jimnys where the vast majority of owners drive so sedately for so long that parts of the vehicle can be seen as perfectly functional even when they are on the brink of failure. Then the minute they are subjected to the slightest bit of hard use they fail. It happens with the coolant system, crank position sensors and perhaps transfer cases?
Hopefully Jack's 'box will last a little longer.

Mine did the chain slip noise too, but still got a few thousand km's out off it by using it gently when setting off. After changing the chain it still goes and even more thousand km's. Mine got the trailgear reduction gear sprockets for the chain that are worn out. All bearings are OK after inspection. Changed some bearings to chase a noise but to no effect. But still goes and is going back in later this week when I have changed the seals.
With the original sprockets I would think that changing the chain would be more successful. Original chains can be bought online for approx 150 GBP, bought mine in Dubai from partsouq.
buying a used complete case would be smarter when you have the original gearing. And especially at that price.

Collected and fitted the 50k unit (not tested yet!). Will look at putting a new chain on the old one at some point. Cheers everyone!

Hi all, jumping in on this discussion. I'm looking to convert from an R72 to R7ME gearbox due to my R72 failing. I'll be keeping the stock 15" wheels so from what I can find on the forum, I'll need to swap the transfer box, intermediate prop and diffs.
I can't find any info on what part numbers of transfer box, prop & diffs I need to go with the conversion... any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are a few breakers on here who can supply the needed parts. Be aware, I have 215/75/15 tyres on, and still about 8% down on gearing - so motorway runs are less fun than normal. The low range is exactly the same.
