Help / Recommendations - transfer box was created by me101
Hi, my motor is a 2007 VVT, but I have the old R7ME box with manual transfer. I keep buying used transfer boxes (which are getting more expensive) and they just don't last long (joys of buying used / unknown). Current box is leaking and I'm sure I heard a chain slip noise while away this weekend. So, do I get my old box fully reconditioned with new chain etc, or do I look for an SJ413 box? This was recommended, but I can't seem to engage my brain at the minute to work out if I will be getting lower gearing? I am already 10% down on original R72 box in high range, so don't want to make road work any worse than it already is.
Cheers

At that mileage, I may! Gives me time to decide what to do. Where would it need picking up from?

SJ box would not be good in your Jimny with your 4. something diffs. would be OK for 32" or 33"
I spent hours on the grimjeeper calculator to make a SJ 4.16 transfer case work in my '05 VVT but I found I would have to change both gearbox and diffs to make it work for highway driving. Ended up changing my transfer case gears. Now years later and 40-50000km the Trail Gears sounds like they are worn out.
have not had any major fails but changed the chain last year for a new one as it started to slip. Does not fit so well to the worn gears though so lots of noises. but still got me to denmark and back in May.
Next time I will not put new gears in with a used chain, but change the chain and gears together.
I see you pull a trailer as well like me. Guess we put a bit more strain on the drivetrain like that
Buy the used box with low milage!
I drove 1000km to the south of sweden to buy my extra box and paid approx 350 GBP

Thanks for your input - I'll forget the SJ idea! Yes, the trailer doesn't help. Cheers
