Transfer case swap? was created by Lambert
Quick question, has anyone swapped out a later gen3 button case for a early lever case and managed to successfully retain all the traction control functions? I know that traction control is not a function of the transfer case but with the late gen3 the 4x4 control module seems to be well integrated into the rest of the systems and I can't for one minute believe it's just a matter of bridging some terminals or is it? Reason for asking is I have a spare case and am considering a reduction set for it to open up the available tyre sizes. However if it's not going to retain the traction control then the spare case could need a new home.

I was under the impression that all the traction control magic was a function of the breaking system. Can't see any issues myself so long as you keep any electronic plugs on the transfer case happy on the replacement case. I assume it one has the one like none traction models?

Ah. It's got the basic switch functions. I'm more interested in the electronic versions actuators and if they feed back to the controller. It's electronic and therefore out of my comfort zone.

I dont have the diagrams for late model jimny although if you PM me your vin number I can look them up if you want.

Looking at the Gen4, which is the same underneath as the late Gen3 Jimnys, the 4WD system and the ESP system both have CANBUS communication so can communicate

There is a state table for ESP operation that shows the parameters including the road speed and the gearbox mode (AT) and how these affect ESP control. 4WD mode is not featured in the table as a main controlling factor of ESP

However the car does use the 4WD-L signal to turn off ESP and Hill Descent control on/off as ESP is disabled in 4WD-L and Hill Start mode can be turned off in 4WD-L.
