tyres / wheel spacers

Hi Guys.....Just bought a 2009 gen 3 jimny to get up on exmoor to join a few clay shooting buddies , although with me its more clay missing .
The Jimny has 15 x 5 1/2 JJ rims fitted with 205 /70 R15 road tyres. Is it possible to fit fatter all terrain tyres to these rims ? I don't want to increase the height of the tyre, just fatter. If this is possible will wheel spacers be needed for body clearance. Probably been asked a thousand times before but i'm new so bear with me.

The biggest tyres for standard gearing and suspension are 215.75r15. These will fir standard wheels and also offer a little more ground clearance. Do bear in mind that wider is not always better especially on a relatively lightweight vehicle like a Jimny, you need some ground pressure to get the tyres to bite. Otherwise if you are not wanting a taller tyre there are all terrain versions of the 205.70r15 available but in practice though this is about the smallest overall diameter tyre that is readily available in off road patterns without venturing into expensive specialist applications, anything wider but with a lower profile will be road bias for SUV and crossovers.

might just stick to bog standard size and add a small wheel spacer .

I would give it a try with what you have got and see how it goes. A number of “standard” road tyres have two different tread patterns, HT is Highway Terrain and AT All Terrain, an AT tyre will provide more grip on the soft stuff, but make little difference on the road.

My Jimny came with Duellers AT on the front and HT on the rear, at some stage I am changing to an AT tread all round, probably Geolanders.

Thanks DrRobin, The wee beastie came with four new road tyres, problem is they are all different brands , not the best set up ! I think I might go for the standard size tyre in an AT tread and a small spacer maybe , just to improve the "stance".
My previous 4x4 climbed the moors on road tyres with no problem at all so I think , in truth , their may be more a desire to butch the jimny up a bit than anything else, but hey ! boys and toys !

There are a couple of disadvantages to spacers, the tyres will sling more mud up the sides of the car and the service life of wheel bearings and kingpin bearings is going to be reduced. I farm with my Jimny so am off road every day on tracks and fields, I expect about 18 months to 2 years from a set of kingpin bearings and I don't have spacers. I have seen reports of people having the same or lower service life who are only using their Jimny recreationally at weekends but they have spacers and or off set wheels. I'm not saying don't have spacers just be aware there are consequences.
