Hi!

Today a family friend gave his 1999 Jimny to me, he just retired and used it to drive around the Quarry where he worked, because of this its full of dust and rocks and needs a good clean.

I on the other hand am not the most confident driver and tend to avoid it but this car seems lovely and I would like to start driving again the only issue is I know absolutely nothing about cars. I have a degree in aircraft maintenance so I understand how to use tools and properly care for a vehicle I just dont know specifics and would love to start restoring and eventually modifying this car!

From a quick glance and test drive the exterior and guts of the car work perfectly, the interior has just been left to gather dust and as such most parts need a deep clean or to be replaced.

It desperately needs 2 new seats for the front (I am going to keep the rear seats removed), a new radio and speaker system (hopefully with bluetooth) and headliner (I think thats what its called, the felt above your head).

I have looked around online and cant seem to find much information, could anyone help with where I could get parts that would be compatible with this model?

Thank you, I can already tell I will become a regular on here!

Hi and welcome along.
That's a fine layer of [strike]dirt[/strike] quarry on the carpet!
Can I ask if the vehicle has an MOT?
Just asking as it's a Jimny and they rust, if it has not been used on the road and you intend to do this may be worth checking the rot spots first.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

It got its mot 4 years ago and checking up on its history it seems pretty good with not too many problems.

I am gonna give it a good cleandown tomorrow to check if there is any rust but its really not as bad as it looks in the picture, its mostly just from work boots carrying muck and rocks in.

If its good though its just the cosmetics and whereabouts what parts to get to make it a bit more comfortable.

Sounds like a plan.
Just have a good MOT type look for rot, boot floor, rear body mounts and mounts under the headlamps are the most common spots.
It actually looks ok and being on a quarry away from road salt is a good thing. My rational was to see what needs doing for a MOT before the cosmetics. Plenty of parts about, chap on here breaks Jimnys.
Yes it's called the headlining.

Thats awesome, I have worked with a lot of rust prevention and removal on aircraft so hopefully it wont be too bad, I am hoping to get some nicer seats and a good quality stereo in there but anything else is just extra, I am very exited to get this car cleaned up and on the road!

There are 3 main alternatives for seats, same again from a better donor Jimny, not totally comfortable but fairly easy to find and fit. A set of recaro buckets out of the previous Ignis sport. Getting rarer and dearer now and needs some work to fit. Full on after market race seats, very comfortable but requires custom fitting.

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.
Bellerophon (2024 grello van daily
ADOS Attention Deficit Ooooh Shiny!
