Brilliant article, thanks for sharing. I guess the wheel base was just [about] right for the job.

Perhaps we could scrap HS2 and buy a fleet of them, it would be cheaper and more fun, but perhaps a little slower.

Cool that you've tried it out for yourself. Where did you come by the wheels? I was thinking of putting them on a jimny when I get one despite how terrible they are to run lol

Can we assume that the rail wheels simply keep the Jimny on the rails (free-wheeling) and the drive is through the rubber tyres making contact with the tops of the rails? Braking via the road wheels?

Another technology is to drive the rail wheels via hydrostatic pump - with the road tyres lifted clear of the rails. Either way it offers the flexibility to leave the rail track quickly if the 10.30 Express to London is approaching your Jimny at high speed. Train versus Jimny - I know who will lose!

The wheels and tyres were listed for sale on trademe.co.nz by someone in Nelson. I think they cost me around $NZ500. Once I'd tried them and decided that they weren't any good on road, I sold them on for about the same price. I can't remember the exact tyres size on them, but it was something like 255 40 18 and they were directional.

I’d be very interested see any if you had photos of them since I’ve never been able to find pictures of Aussie ones

Cheers for those links
I found one photo of a QR national operated Jimny with the same aftermarket wheels as seen on the NZ ones but little info on it
