Whatcha. Need a bit of advice from the gadget savvy among us. If I wanted to mimic the spotter cameras on jeeps and rangies and didn't want a dedicated screen as I prefer to just have my android phone do such things, is there a way to achieve this and with several cameras like one each side, one at the front and a high and low angle of the back for reversing and trailers? I don't want to spend lots of money on the actual cameras as they are unlikely to survive very long before getting smashed or ripped off on a briar or chewed by a sheep.

So how can it be done? Thanks in advance.

You would need to either use some fairly expensive IP cameras and a router in the car to link them together in order to view on a phone, or something like a taxi cctv kit...

Hmmm that's more complicated than I was wanting to get with it all. I was thinking along the lines of a series of cheap wifi reverse cameras each powered separately and individually selected to view as required. That way the app could think that each camera was in a different car instead of a different view of the same car. Or am I being optimistic again? It's just that buying a 20 odd quid camera for replacement purposes is a much easier pill than only being able to buy a camera as part of the unique product package at a hundred odd every time I kill one.

I would have thought a cheap wifi camera (on amazon for £20 ish), a WiFi hotspot device and an android phone would work.

It gotta be worth 20 quid to experiment even if only as a reverse or trailer camera.

I had a camera like that for years in the horse trailer. When Wife and daughters go to practice the daughters used the wifes phone as a wifi hotspot, and acessed the camera in the trailer with their phones. Worked ok for a while, but samsung phones did not have the possibility to change the wifi SSID name and so when the wife got a new phone it got a bit too much hassle for them..
Now i bougth a dedicated system with two cameras and a loose screen inside the car. now it is both backing and inside for the horses.

But for my Jimny I also have been playing with cameras. Bought a dash cam that goes over the rear view mirror with integrated backup camera. can switch it over to show revers all the time even when driving forward. Cost like 30£ on ebay. mounted so it shows the trailer hitch and that is very useful!

When I changed the head unit in the jimny for a 2DIN unit it had inputs for a couple of cameras. So I bought a front facing camera on ebay, not reversed/mirrored, that i have attached underneath the car, facing forward. But it is stuck under there in the dark and in daylight the light outside makes the contrast too big makes so not useful. Tried a mirrored camera first but that was just confusing. :)

bought extra blind spot mirrors attached to the underside of the original mirrors, more help in those :)
