Toothpaste is a very fine, mild polish. Takes a while, but with time and elbow grease, you can get a fine polish. Used this on a fair bit of surfaces. That said, it needs to be a toothpaste with beads in it, not one of those environmentally friendly types.

I gave mine a polish using a buffing machine and t-cut. I was amazed at how well it buffed out all the years of offroading scratches leaving an amazing finish..
Polished all the scratches out of the door mirror frames, all the roof rails, and polished up a dulled headlight lens in seconds...

If they won't renovate look for a good used one in scrapyards or eBay
