Couldn't you just build a "boot box", right above the little storage bin already there? Basically just lift the floor a bit.. Or am I misunderstanding something here.

Well, I am the party pooper. Ruined the whole thing, being all full of questions.
But seriously, building a little box there at the bottom is easy to get it stable, easy to get space, and pretty easy to cover with a matching fabric/whatever, so it's not very visible. Bolt it down, and add a little lock, and things won't go flying if there is an accident either. Or have a net on the inside of the box. Just be safe!
