You are all right, which makes it tricky. There's the old phrase 'horses for courses' which seems apt here.
Modifying is a deeply personal thing. The individual needs and desires (and budget!) are major influences to the end machine. Ive seen many mods that i wouldnt even consider, but thats because they don't suit my needs. For example; I havent bought any of Dave's sexy superpro droplinks (yet!) because i have the disconnect kit, meaning the standard ones suit me (and they aint broke yet). When its time for new ones, then i would probaby buy the superpro ones as a little treat over the cheaper ones because they were designed by people much more clever than me specifically to suit the jimny. The subaru cheaper ones look fairly good in the pictures, but as i dont know the suitability, seller or brand i would be naturally wary of them (even though they are a lot cheaper).
With the topic of suspension I went for a trialmaster kit straight off from factory stuff because i could afford it at the time and was widely thought to be the best of the breed due to being designed to suit a jimny. Currently I am trying to sort out new shocks after lifting it with some top spec Zanfi springs. The trailmaster shocks are still in there and have never had any issues at all, so for me, the extra expense at initial purchase is far outweighed by the lasting performace it resulted in
When im looking at new shocks i am learing about things like rebound rate, valving, fluid or gas, etc, and the importance of getting it correct for the weight of the car, lift, etc. The cheaper options are excellent value and do the job for bashing about on pay and play, but the specs i see upon comparison lead me to think they are 'something that fits' rather than designed by clever buggers to be the right thing for the job. As i use my jimny on the road as well, i want it to be as good as possible to drive there, as well as a monster in the sticky stuff
Some of the cheap things ive tried have lasted, most have not. This leads to my current approach of wait and get the better ones when you can afford it! (took a year of saving for the lockers!). Obviously the guy spinning around with the massive lift and massive grin mentioned was having fun, but i suspect not for long before problems. Great if they love spannering, not so fab if its got to get you to work the next day! Horses for courses
