Hi all. If I were to want to have 4x4 that I could use on the road both for getting out of the farm and also for my extra curricular activities and I wanted to retain a low ratio and without needing to resize the wheels to maintain on road performance, what are the options for off the shelf transfer boxes? Obviously I would need to fab up new propshaft flanges and or alter lengths to suit as well as make up a carrier. I also accept the likelihood of needing levers instead of the buttons. I had considered a terios t box but it has no low range, and the land rover and jeep offerings bolt to the main box and are stupid heavy too. What else would work?
Cheers in advance.

An lt230 is probably the best bet. They may weigh a ton but are pretty bullet proof, can be mounted divorced, matches the diff offset on the axles, has a 3.32 low ratio and either a 1.2 or 1.6 high ratio depending on the vehicle it came from.
A landcruiser t-case would be another option, not a heavy as the lt230 (chain drive, thinner case casting.) Typically a 1:1 high and 2:1ish low. Quite rare and very expensive to get hold of over here the ones I've seen have been £500 plus.
Pretty much everything else I've come across has a center rear output which is no good for the jimny unless you fit a vitara rear axle on the back.

I believe the Lada Niva transfer box fits the bill. Keithy has been threatening to make a permanent 4x4 Jimny for a while. He must know something!

I'm not sure that the robustness of the lt230 is of any benefit in something as light and underpowered as a Jimny, maybe if an ls3 was providing the motive force but otherwise it seems a bit overkill?
Lada. Good solid Russian engineering in something not too far away from the Jimny. Good plan. Keithy, what do I need to know about this conversion?

The Lada Niva one will be tough as old boots. I had a Niva for several years and used it very hard and nothing ever broke. I sold mine though as even some simple bits are getting difficult to get.

Hate to throw a spanner in the works but the lada t case is l/h output and the jimny is r/h output. The logistics of fitting it would be a nightmare.
