Hi All,
New to the forum, and not sure I'm supposed to be here as I drive a Defender 110... Although I did drive a Samurai for a couple of months in the past, and actually got married in one...
Anyway, I've been quite interested in Jimny's for some time now. Unfortunately, the importer here in Kenya is pretty useless. When asking them about safety features on the Jimny's that they can supply, I received the following reply...:
We retail Jimny for offroaders in Kenya. As such the driving speed is not expected to be one that might need a car to have ABS or ESC.
A car designed for off road if installed with the Airbags, they will keep opening as you drive as such our models designed for Africa i.e JIMNY & GYPSY are not fitted with the airbags.
So I was wondering... anyone had their airbags explode in their face whilst offroading...?
Thanks!

Never
The firing mechanism for airbags is very sophisticated now. In the very dim and distance past it used to be an impact sensor at the front of the car. Now it is a complex microprocessor device with multiple inputs including speed, de-accelleration etc. so the "firing" parameters are strictly controlled.

It's a common myth that airbags need to be disabled for off-road use. The truth is, they will only activate in the event of an impact where you are likely to strike the dash/steering wheel with considerable force. Whether you are on- or off-road, the safety benefit of having an airbag remains the same.
