Grateful thanks to facade and nick for the very sensible replies (you'll notice I didn't include you in that statement, Daniel   )
Based on facade's faith in the humble product, I've lashed out 14 of my English pounds on the MS309....rather more modern than the brick that died recently
Thanks Nick....sadly I don't have a smartphone....:woohoo: :woohoo:
Will post my initial findings after I've had a play....

Although unfortunately no use to Gus, as promised, I plugged my £4 ebay BT dongle to the Jimny OBD port, and it worked (not unsurprisingly) with Carista and DashCommand Android apps, but simply told me I had no DTCs, so I couldn't check the full diagnostics capability! However, It does still support the usual basic PID reads, which gives some nice readouts...
They are all well and good, but you can't really watch them in any useful way as you are going along, and you need to have a phone/tablet/something to do it, so I never use them!! I made a GPS logger which plotted OBD info in a nice Google Earth format for my Saab, so I may try and re-purpose that to the Jimny at some point.
For info, this was the BT OBD dongle that I bought...
On a related topic, does anyone have a CAN database (dbc or xml file), or a list of PIDs (not just diagnostics) for a Jimny?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Thanks Facade,
I saw those on the Rhinopower website. They are fault codes, rather than the informational PIDs or CAN frame decode that I was after. I am really just looking to see what info on current conditions/performance is available on the CAN bus, to see if I can make any use of it. E.g. If the ABS module is reporting individual wheel speeds, I can see the amount of relative wheel spin etc. Sadly, I am just a sucker for data like that
I have a module that logged trips in an older car, that made KML files for every ignition cycle, and showed me all sorts of pointless and unnecessary data ( see below). It is more a "because I can" than a "because I need to"
