OBD2 recommendations please... was created by gusthegorilla
Sadly, my old OBD 2 reader has finally given up the ghost, so I've been researching a replacement.

Seems to be a bit of a minefield....thousands to pick from, some of which MIGHT be compatible with a Jimny (2007, in my case ), some might not.....read dozens of reviews and the biggest gripe seems to be not function and performance, but the abundance of counterfeit versions available for which, obviously, there is no warranty or back-up service

Can anyone recommend one which will give me read/diagnose/reset functions with a modicum of reliability and not cost the price of a small house !??

Thanks a lot..

Gus

I use an eBay Chinese clone of the Autel Maxiscan MS309, they are only about £12 and do all I actually want, ie tell me the fault code and reset the eml.

I also splashed out on some ferociously expensive thing that doesn't do a great deal more on the Jimny, but can reset electric handbrakes and the steering angle sensor in The Other Car- a Launch CRP129.

It is still a waste of money (until I actually use it to reset a handbrake or turn off an abs lamp, then it will be £200 the first time, £100 the second etc.)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Have you tried a Smartphone App such as Carista and one of the ELM327 BT adapters? I use that on my Skoda quite happily to check and reset DTCs and have used it on BMWs and Audis. Not tried on the Jimny yet - I will see if I can have a test at the weekend and see how much it does.

I bought one of those, cost about a fiver, but it doesn't work with an iphone.

Doesn't work with my android tablet either tbh, but it can't ever work with an iphone because apple don't support such things via bluetooth.

The ms309 lives in the glovebox, just plugs in and works
