When you say you couldn't get it to fit do you mean the nylon bush wouldn't fit in to the eye of the remote or you couldn't get the bayonet fitting to locate??
I didn't have any trouble fitting mine and it only took a few minutes to replace once the centre console was removed??

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

It shouldn't be tight. It should just drop in to the eye it's not a press fit and as you have a used one it should be slightly worn.
Do you have the eye straightened up?
Use a rod or something to straighten it up and in neutral.
It should look like this diagram? If not do you have the correct part?
Check out the "bayonet" fitting on the gear lever and the arched alloy remote supports as they were only fitted to the VVT box.
The earlier boxes had steel supports.
There is just a chance you either have the wrong part or someone has fitted an earlier box??
Does the replacement match your original one??
