Driving in 2nd low versus 1st high - differences? was created by Bosanek
Hello!
As far as I know, all Jimnys (with both manual and electric transfer boxes) have 2:1 reduction ratio in low range.
If my technical knowledge is correct, that should mean that driving in 2nd gear in low range should be exactly the same as driving in 1st gear in high range. Or not?
Are there any differences in gear ratios, or in torque curve, or something else during driving? Any practical difference to the driver?
If those two gears are exactly the same in all driving aspects, wouldn't that imply that 4th gear low and 2nd gear high are also the same?
If those two statements are true, would it then be correct to say that the only "additional" gears which you get in low range are the three odd gears (1st, 3rd and 5th) (and a reverse of course)?

I don't know the exact numbers, but you're right. 2nd low is either the same as 1st high or slightly higher. So low range only gives 1 lower gear, which is a bit annoying really.
I do like driving around in low range though- the closer ratios and extra bit of transmission noise make it feel like you are going much quicker than you really are!

You want to try it with a 6.5:1 Low Box

As you point out Bosanek, you also have 2 reverse ratios, pretty handy off road, unlike crossovers like the Fiat Panda 4x4 which just has a very low 1st gear

How do they compare? What gear would be the equivalent of 1st high?

5th Gear in Low box is lower than 1st Gear in High Box ... Basically i can get about 15mph in 5th Gear Low Box
