Hi there, I am looking for a cycle carrier preferably towball mount. What do people recommend?

Trouble is that to avoid the spare wheel the bikes are a long way behind the car. I use roofbar mounted units as i think it's safer for the bikes

look and see which one you would like then go and find a second hand one on ebay, Ive had 3 4-bike carrier set ups and have a swan neck job for my S-Cross, tilts down so you can access the boot too.

I'm not sure that I like the idea of stuff on the roof in case of ripping it off on a country lane, plus everyone seems to be of the opinion that the roof bars are cheese grade plastic which is another worry. Hence mounting on the back just seems better.
I like the idea of second hand off of eblag that appeals to me though I'm not so sure about the maxxraxx idea of a single support bar. I can see the benefits of being able to fit through any frame but it also means having to find the centre of balance of the bike so it sits right which is only going to become more difficult with multiple bikes. I'm a bit more inclined towards twin forks as it suits how my mind works plus it also give greater flexibility to carry more than bikes, for example a few weeks ago I was following a wrangler with a pallet hooked on his bike rack who pulled into a local camp site with I assumed the intention of using the wood for a fire which I thought was quite ingenious.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

You can buy the two arm type that fit to the spare wheel, if you dont mind bashing the 'bikes to pieces.
I have a thule comedy "3 bike" towball mounted carrier, that just about takes 2 bikes. I had to move the pivot bolt to lengthen it, but as Wombat says, it is a long way out from the towbar.
Never tried it on the jimny in anger tbh, just to check the fit. I'd still rather drop the frontwheel out and throw it in the back of The Other Car.

If it's just 1 bike, strap it to the spare tyre with a couple of short cam straps.
