Steering geometry help was created by Lambert
Hi. Am I right in thinking that because the front axle is live and that the track rod simply links the wheels, that the steering geometry is effectively a balanced system? Ie if the tracking was out of tolerance it would manifest on both tyres? I ask as I had a pair of new bridgestone on the front 6 months ago and I can now definitely see that the near side corner of the near side tyre is being scrubbed but not the off side tyre in any way. Tomorrow I am getting another pair of bridgestone as the rear are done so I will be putting these on the front. I will have the tracking checked but I am wanting to get my head around system and if as I suspect it is right I could save the cost of checking for no benefit if you see what I mean. I have heard of roundabout tyre syndrome but the defender is basically the same geometry and it doesn't scrub the tyres though they are Michelin and impervious to pain. Help?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The front tyres should wear dead flat, unless the tracking is out, when as you surmise both tyres wear, or the camber & caster are out on one wheel, due to a bent axle tube, or more likely (kingpin) swivel bearing wear.
I suppose enthusiastic cornering could wear one edge, but you'd have to drive it like it was a hot hatch, and probably it would have fallen over by now.

Aww don't say things like that, it's on it's second front axle tube already. I haven't got the patience to do that again. Hmm I will have the tracking checked and see what gives.

Check the kingpins for wear, and the track/tie rod ends first.

All rebuilt with the new s/h axle in the spring of this year with either genuine or better quality parts eg timken bearings and it has no wobble at all.

not sure if this helps ....
tracking helped mine, and my original tyres were extremely worn on the nearside due to roundabouts
