In the interests of spreading knowledge I need to come clean on an "issue" tonight.
As part of the gearbox change I thought I was also chasing a collapsed wheel bearing or UJ. The garage also thought that a bearing or UJ had failed when driving to the workshop.
So tonight I jacked the car up and went around every wheel etc and found nothing wrong. Everything seems tight.
The noise seems to be coming from the back of the car.
So I was looking for what it could be and general rummaging around the rear of the car. I lifted the boot carpet and....
hey presto! the Wheel Brace had come out of its plastic wallet and was lying, bare metal to bare metal in the boot!.
Popped it back in its jacket and the noise was gone
So it had me and the garage fooled. Anyway there still is a very small vibration at very, very low speed which could be the UJ binding slightly but the vibration was turned into a significant noise by the wheel brace. Sorted!
(The vibration is really tiny and only at walking pace so I will leave it until it gets worse and shows its hand as to where it is coming from, it might even be resonance in the exhaust)

When I asked for help about a maddening knocking noise a few moths back one of the first suggestions mad was to look for something like a kid's toy floating around in the jack's storage hole. Too easy but it was the dampers in my case.
