It's push buttons I have, how do you lock 4wd from outside?

There are various ways of doing the manual hubs thing I went for avm hubs as they are designed to fit the jimny with no modifications or spacers. Regardless of the type used they all have a big rotary "switch " to engage the drive set in the centre of the hub and all you need to do is rotate the switch to locked at the beginning of the off road section and then select 4x4 in the car as normal depending on need, so even with the hubs locked you are not in 4x4 until you select it with the buttons meaning you don't have to get out of the car constantly if you are alternating between field and road every few yards, you just lock in the hubs once at the beginning of the adventure and out again at the end. The other thing with manual hubs is the availability of 4x2lo which I have discovered is actually a lot more useful than 4x4 on rough lanes but you still have the opportunity to go 4x4 at a moments notice. manual hubs really are the making of a jimny into a useful tool.

See Kirkynuts thread about locking the vacuum hubs but it involved taking the hub off and moving the locking collar inside. Once set to locked they should stay locked.

Replacing the vacuum pipes is a simple job and should see it all back to normal in an hour or 2.

Once fixed you can also add a simple 2low switch if the idea of using low range in 2wd appeals to you. As 11/60 says, its a very useful mod!

Ok replaced the vacuum pipes with silicon tubing! All went well an easy job. Goes into 4 wheel drive, green light stays on everything good there! But the 4L (in yellow) makes bleeping noise and won't stay on! My car is the push button type for 4x4. Can anyone help please?

Did you push the clutch in then push the 4L button?
