Yes you can turn the tc off . Mine also has the buttons rather than the lever and pretty sure it works off of a solenoid , I also think the vacuum tank is now in the engine bay (not 100% on that though ) , will have to have a look at some point .

The tcase is actuated by a motor.

Is that why you have to hold the button for a few seconds before it locks in ? , and so the motor is doing what the lever used to do .

I doubt it, its more likely to ensure that you don't accidentally press the button and to ensure that it won't get activated by electrical noise. It works much the same as the lever, a gear on the end of the motor moves the selector rod backwards or forwards.
