Newbie question about Rev Limiter and ECU

Now that's something I didn't know, I'd have expected it to go into 4th rather than risk breaking the engine.
With the electronic transfer box that would only be about 35 in 3rd too
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

I'm not sure why it is like that, maybe so people don't drive around in low range all the time without realising?
Still, the rev-limiter is still there to stop the engine from being damaged so it's all good! Rev limiters are made to be hit

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the replies!!
Before writing this topic, I´m pretty sure I hit the Rev Limiter. That is the reason I asked in the first place. I was driving on the highway and decided to test how high RPMs I could get. So I floored it in Drive on a stretch with a slight hill (decline). It immediately bounced back to about 4000 RPM, with what I assumed was an upshift, at approx. or just before 6000 RPM. The speed was not all that high, maybe around 110-120 km/h. I tried two times with the same result. It was only in Drive all the time, I never changed gears.
I thought I´d ask just to check whether it could have damaged the engine, and just to learn more about it.
The conclusion then is, I guess, that Jimnys with automatic transmission cannot have their engine damaged due to high RPM because the Rev Limiter prevents it (unless gear is changed)?
Obviously, I would´t think doing it too often is good for the engine either....

What you describe is normal for an automatic.
If you floor it the transmission will downshift to give more acceleration, and then upshift when you lift off, or if you don't just before max rpm. It may go down 2 gears if you are just rolling along at 45 mph.
(I don't think it is clever enough to keep at peak torque by shifting early)

At 6000rpm you didn't hit the rev limiter, and even if you had (could?) have done, you wouldn't harm anything. It's set at a safe level, so you can reach it as often as you like and nothing bad will happen!
With the car in neutral you can see how high the rev limiter is set and what hitting it sounds like.
The Jimny engine makes peak power (if you can call 80hp a peak?) at around 6000rpm, so you have to rev it high to get the best out of it.

Ok, so in other words, it is impossible to hit the rev limiter with an automatic transmission while driving in Drive? And what I experienced when reaching 6000rpm was simply an upshift?
