Newbie question about Rev Limiter and ECU was created by Norwegian Jimny
Hi,
I just bought a Model 2012 Jimny with automatic transmission which I am madly in love with. I´m a total newbie and don´t know much about em´yet, so bear with me.
Two possibly silly question to begin with: Does anyone know if this model has a Rev Limiter and ECU making it impossible to breach the excessive RPM redline? (i.e. in order to prevent engine damage) How does this work?
Regards, Sondre

I believe it has an ecu controlled rev limiter but have never revved mine so high as to find out. It will likely cut sparks via the coil pack briefly. You wouldn't want to do it too often as unburnt fuel will get into the catalytic converter and damage it if repeated often.

Yes it does have an ECU and a rev limiter. Nearly all petrol engines since the early 90s have a rev limiter!
I'm not 100% sure on the Jimny system but rev limiters normally work by cutting the fuel as well as retarding the timing so there shouldn't be any problems with unburnt fuel in the CAT. I've certainly never heard any characteristic pops from unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

The rev limiter cuts fuel. Its set a long way past peak power so not many people will ever have used it. I wouldn't worry about engine damage, the rev limiter is there to prevent it, from memory its set to around 7000RPM, less than on a Swift GTi which is at 7400RPM.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Unless you start messing withe the gear selector it isn't possible to reach the limiter when in D.
You might if you get it flat out in 4th, and knock it into 2 I suppose

I thought that, but it would be easy in low range where the auto only shifts up to 3rd.
