Synthetic rope is a very nice thing to use. Use it myself for competition. Just remember one thing. Always keep it washed and clean. Otherwise it looses much of it's strength and then break rather easily. I found out the hard way after a long weekend spend in a lot of mud :D

And also.. Since you're probably on a budget. Remember there's a good quality synthetic rope and there's cheap rope. All those £300 winches you see with synthetic rope is the cheap stuff. Since 30 meter of 10 mm Dyneema rope it self costs £200-250.

There a many downsides to using wire rope. But also some good things to say. It's cheap. Lasts probably longer if well maintained. Does not require the same amount of cleaning after each use.

So do yourself a favor and take all factors into consideration before getting a winch(rope). Just because it says synthetic rope in the winch ad, it doesn't mean it's the be all end all of everything regarding winch ropes :)

If I were you and on a budget. I'd get a decent winch with a steel rope. Learn how to use the winch while saving up for a quality synthetic rope. Then when feeling comfortable with it, swap for the synthetic rope and keep the wire rope as backup :)
