I've had a Jimny (98 and 08) for a few years and I've only just found out about the "bed configuration"

Basically I never knew the rear seat back can be tilted to about 45 degrees to give a half decent place for a snooze.

I don't think you can with the older ones? The rear seats don't go back.

Yes, the older ones can do it...
Just take the headrest off from the front seats and put the back from the backseats as far as you can tilt them.
Then with the softtop roof open, some gentle and soft music, some bubbling stuff called champagne, looking at the stars toghether with your beloved one... romantic isn't it... until you have to return back home, crawling out on hands and knee's, hitting the handbrake lever and those two gearlevers, knocking your head, your back hurting like hell, at home taking some pills to make the pain stop...
No more romance, back to reality, Jimny's are "only good" for offroading, the hard stuff... it's not a pussy wagon.
