i have a tjm snorkel with the safari type top fitted. i choose to run the top facing forward as the noise when pointing rearwards is immense. i also have a k&n panel filter
anyway, the performance and economy of the jimny had started to drop off so i opened the air box to see the top of the filter looking clean. on taking the filter out and looking at the underside i was amazed to see the bottom of the panel filter almost clogged solid with mud, leaves , etc.
i have now fitted a pipercross filter and the k&n will be kept as a spare.
the crap clogging the filter is a direct result of running the snorkel top to the front. i have now fitted a mushroom top to the snorkel. not only is it quieter but it will obviously keep the filter cleaner for longer.
when replacing the top the amount of dried mud coating the inside of the snorkel was disturbing. all now clean , running well and way better mpg.

My friends with Land Rovers have reported the same to me.
With the K&N you can just wash it out in petrol so it doesn't cost anything other than the oil needed to re-oil it.
You can get mushroom type filters with pre-cleaners in that collect the heavier dust and allows it to drop out. I'm guessing these are the type to have.

I'm not sure how widely known it is but the FSM gives two maintenance schedules, one for 'normal conditions' and one for 'severe driving conditions'.
The service interval for the stock air filter when used under 'severe conditions' is 1500 miles but the FSM does note that it should be checked more often when operating in dusty conditions; for 'normal conditions' the interval is 24,000 miles.

i think the problems have been water and mud splattered when laning. driving rain can't help either. i'm happy with the mushroom cowl and i'll know to inspect the filter more regularly now. it will be a clean filter straight in every 500 miles or so

I've had the pre-filter on my Snorkel for 2 years because of the grasshopper plagues and the bulldust. They are very good and seem to extend the life of the paper filter quite a lot. On some days in summer I have had to empty the pre-filter very regularly, especially from the 'hoppers. I have an insect-screen across the radiator too, for the same reason.
They only cost about $25 from most tractor suppliers and come in a variety of sizes and a fair range of throat sizes. Unscrew the lid, chuck the dust and bugs out, screw it back on and away you go.
