Hi.
I had hyundai galloper (previous to jimny) about 8 years and that car has never failed. Good, solid offroader with only one single blemish -it's consumption. But as happy as I was with galloper, I wanted to sell it while I could get some money. I admired jimny, watching video, reading everything that was available on internet. So, finally, November 2013 I bought a new jimny (2013).
But 3 weeks after a first drive I noticed some problems. While driving, suddenly a grinding noise starts and it seams like my jimny is about to fall apart. Previous to this I was off road (using 4x4 just for a short part of road) and just returned on the city road (2x4), driving about 50 km/h. Next time this happened car was about 2 months old. On the highway, at speed of 120 km/h. Ever since this happens once or twice a month. Mysterious terrible grinding noise, can't even say for sure where it comes from. It is so loud that I could not judge. It seamed it was somewhere in the area of front wheels. Sometimes it seams like metal grinding, other time it seamed to me it was rubber-grinding noise. I drove about 2 miles before it mysteriously stops. Noise disappeared by itself (first time). Next time I stopped an engine. The moment I started an engine again, the noise was gone. Third time I stopped the car, with an engine running, than switched 4x4 for a short while and the noxt moment grinding disappeared.
I was told on this forum that the cause of grinding are locking hubs and I am about to make my second trip to the dealer (first time he said everything is fine). But, can't help myself, I am not happy with jimny anymore. Besides this grinding noise, I also hear some bumps on the rear side when changing speeds. But there other things, too, and since I have a brand new car and already with 5 or 6 different (mechanical) knockings and grindings, I became paranoid. It warries me that jimny is nothing of what I've seen on youtube and forums - nothing of what I hoped it would be. I have lots of doubts. I thought this was a seriuos offroader, solid and reliable. And now, suddenly I am afraid to take it offroad thinking something is about to fail or fall off.
I'd like others to share some experience with me - about it's quality or failures and challenges that jimny has survived? When you go off-road, how demanding this trips are and did you have any problems off road?
Thank you very much.
Mirkom.

Hope you could understand my croatian english.

If its only starting when off-road then it could be stones trapped behind the brake discs.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

I take my Jimny offroad and drive it very hard and the tracks I go on are known as some of the toughest in Australia. It has held up to everything and is an awesome offroader. You made a good purchase they are very easy to work on and have excellent capabilities

It happens on the motorway, too.

Thank you. I guess I am just discouraged with all this mechanical noise on a brand new car. With galloper I used to take very demanding off-road trips and I wasn' very gentle to that car. Even with aging, galloper has never failed.
I took my brand new jimny off-road, nothing extreme - just twice in snow and maybe 4-5 times in mud and macadam. And I can already hear metalic noise when discharging a clutch as if there was a loose space on differentials or T-case and occasionally I hear grinding on locking hubs (as I've described above). This grinding stops as soon as I switch 4x4 on and off. (Of course, I switch to 4x4 only when off-road- if there is a need, but never on asphalt roads). All this made me feel very disappointed. I can't resist thinking that few undemanding off-road trips converted a brand new jimny into a warn out wreck.
It is under warranty and frankly I just hope they will solve my problems next week.
Wish you even more fun on off-road with your jimny!

Cars are mechanical and things can always go wrong with mechanical things - it does not matter if they are brand new or really old. Sometimes you just get that one car out of 1000's that has an issue. You are covered with warranty and that is good. Apart from that like I said Jimnys are cheap and easy to work on. Once you get it sorted you will have a ball offroad. Dont let something like this put you off :)
