OK.. so daft question here..
is there anything to stop you mounting a winch upside down (Plate at the top)?
as far as I can tell there is no lubrication reason so the thing should work at any angle.. :whistle:

I own a fleet of search and rescue helicopters and its easier than flying them upside down

Best thing is to mount them feet-forward. But if that's not possible, I don't see why feet-up is any worse than feet-down

Only downside I could think of is approach angle

its going under the floor at the rear.. fitting it upside down is easier and also puts the motor on the other side of the exhaust so I can get it higher tucked up in between the chassis rails... however Tom DK to the rescue and its going to be stronger and better to fit bolts forward (or backwards in this case) to the soon to be modified again steel rear bumper!
