Well now, recent statistics actually prove you wrong and it is precisely as Halford says. The biggest problem with drivers is in the young category and the safest are the age range that OAPs are in and that includes me.
Have you not heard the very appropriate expression, "Fools and bairns see things half done"?? Bairn is a standard word in the English language for a baby child.
I fear that very soon, but happily not in my lifetime, cars are either going to be made to be used and thrown away after a few years like a Kleenex (they called it built in obsolescence once) or be the province of the rich/wealthy. The concept of the "People's" car seem to have been lost along with the VW Beetle and camper van. Transport for all is the bus or the train but again the train is heading the way of the wealthy so it looks like the bus for the likes of me. In fact this is so much in keeping with just about everything we want to do these days. I am surprised Guy Fawkes day hasn't been banned let alone the back garden firework party. They want people to choose between eating and heating and expect us to work on regardless until we are really not fit enough to do the job. All this despite the fact that society is getting fatter and likely we will see in about 10 years that the life expectancy will fall as a direct result of obesity and many won't make the OAP age. I do not think that medical science will keep us going that much longer. OK if you want to work till you are 80 years old or more that's fine but if your creaking joints make that a nightmare it will be hell. For many years I wanted the retirement age of women brought into line with men especially as so many women now have careers and thought it unfair they could knock off at 60; sadly the powers that be left it to late to bring men's retirement age down to 60 or the women's up to 65 but this bunch of rule makers want both to go to 68 or whatever and some women suddenly find they are going to have to labour on for more years than expected. All this lottery money that goes to winners could be used to fund hospitals, schools, transport but instead they give a million quid a month for 12 months to on person - now tell me that is not obscene. limit the top prize to half a million and redistribute the wealth and while we are redistributing the wealth let's sort out the big six energy companies. If small ones like Ovo can increase prices by around only 1.5% then why can't the Cartel.
Must stop now cos I have drifted a bit off topic - it always happens when I hear any ageist talk.

I've seen a youth not stop at a roundabout and nearly plough in to me. He should have better eyesight. Come to think of it what age range tends to be on the mobile while driving??

There is a lot more choice now and I suspect that, in real terms, base models cars are cheaper than they ever have been, as well as being safer, far more reliable as well as being quieter and a lot more comfortable. A quick Google reveals that a Suzuki Alto can be picked up for £6000 if you shop around and the average UK wage is around 24K so that's a new 4-door car for 3 months (pre-tax) wages. Was a Beetle ever that cheap? the VW camper van is still available (but not for long), imported from Brazil, for around £30k.
Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

+1 Had a few run-ins lately with drivers that I purposely pass because they seem to unsafe and I don't want to be stuck behind them when they make a mistake.
Do you think that it would be safer to be alongside them and at a considerably higher speed?
