You can also think of fabricating a wood toolbox with the same height of the folded seats. I have thought bout that to make room for recovery gears and a stereo amplifier. Ended up removing the dam seats for now.

I made a load liner out of wood. It's light and is in two pieces, can be removed in about one minute. Oh and I made a wooden step to level the back floor to the height of the folded down seats. The closed in part of the step encloses my amp and the other side is where Istore my recovery strops and snatch block.

This photo shows the back full of tools etc while I was fabricating and fitting my rear recovery points :)

If you want more photos of how it's made and fitted just say so ;)

Here are the pics of my Wilco boot liner. You can still put bits and pieces behind the sides on top of the wheel arches. I think something has dropped down and that is the bulge you can see on the right.
I also have 2 boot tidy type bags behind the front seats in the rear passenger footwell. I keep the general car type stuff in these and it helps keep the rear clear of items rolling around.
In the middle pic you can see where I've pulled the white curtain rod ends out for the pics.
The bumper protection flap also has zips up the side if you wish to stop loose stuff dropping out when opening the door.
I haven't actually got the rod inserted across the front of the liner behind the seats in the pic as it makes the whole thing easier to fold up. The front seats can also be moved all the way forward or back.
As others have said if you wanted a completely flat floor a small shelf could be made up to bring it level with the folded seats.
The best thing with this is it's flexible and you don't lose any room in the back.
You get stick on velcro strips for the sides but they kept pulling off. I've fitted extra elastic on the four corners which go through the eyelets and just hook over the seat belt upper mountings. Cord could be used but I've found that elastic allows some movement when loading and it doesn't interfere with the front seat belts. You get elastic loops on the front to go over the headrests.
The car is used like this most of the time and my wife loves the space for shopping etc. or when you have to carry something bigger but it only takes minutes to unhook it and fold it away.
My car is the later one where the whole seat base has to be removed. If you have the earlier car with separate seat bases that fold forward it's even easier.
