Driving style... Jimny’ have to be driven smoothly. Keep the revs under 3k and keep cruising speeds down to 50-55mph. Defenders and other offroad orientated cars are very similar from what I understand.

A general service may also help, maybe try some fuel additive to clean the injectors. Re-new spark plugs.

If you are running roof bars/roof rack, take them off unless needed.

Other things include:
Low tyre pressures
Exhaust backpressure caused by a blockage along the exhaust system
Sticking EGR valve
Defective oxygen sensor

Ok I thought I was getting bad fuel economy @ 150 miles on half a tank in an auto with AT tyres.
A few ideas for you.
1. Do a service plugs,oil+filter & air filter
2. Never go above 50mph
3. Try & keep below 2500rpm
4. Don't fill it above half a tank of fuel, as the extra weight does make a difference.

when i got my jimny begining of the year it was doing about 18 mpg, after some digging my cat was the main problem, although a good service and the freeing off of a sticky caliper certainly helped,i had a fault code p0420 logged and someone had removed the engine management light bulb aswell.see if you can get the fault codes read aswell.i get about 200 ish miles to a tank now and ive got a 2" lift and run 195 80 15 mud tyres

As Adamdraycott says driving style helps a lot. I never take mine over about 3000 revs which is about 50/55.
I get about 35/37 mpg out of mine!
Let the gears do the work and you will find you very rarely have to go out of top.
Don't boot the throttle or go all the way through the gearbox i.e. shortshift 1-3-5 etc with a light throttle. The same going down.
The car is very low geared so pulls well in all gears.
If you are used to a nippy/sporty car the Jimny is different and likes the gentle lazy method.
Having said that your MPG is way off what it should be so something is wrong!
Does it perform ok?? No smoke from the exhaust etc?? Starts ok no noises??
Might be a valve problem.
As suggested get it serviced properly and if the problem is still there get it on an analyzer :)

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

I'd say the opposite: you want to keep the engine delivering optimal power for your required situation. This doesn't mean to under-rev it, but drive it properly; on flat terrain at constant speed or going downhill, maybe you could get away with such low revs, but when getting up to speed you need to reduce the time spent in the "acceleration" stage, and that means revving it properly.

By changing gears too soon (especially when power is needed) you're making the engine struggle for a long time instead of reaching the goal quickly. The VVT kicks over 3000 rpm and don't forget it's a motorcycle engine which lives on RPM. I change gears at ~3500 in normal circumstances, 4000-4500 under special circumstances (pulling away quickly, going uphill, etc) and over 5000 at least once a day to keep the sparkplugs clean
