Hello markyp2000

The ECT Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (sensor of water temperature) is attaching in the intake manifold. (Figure jimny SOHC)

If the water coolant is loss, or not circulating (pump o thermostat failure) the ECT sending the intake manifold temperature to the ECU and the thermometer.

In this condition, the information sending to the ECU is wrong; the intake manifold temperature is not the temperature of the engine. The temperature that interests is the temperature of the cylinder head.

The ECT has in its interior two sensors, one for the ECU, and other for the thermometer in speedometer

ECU Sensor, external pins in the photo. With engine at operating temperature 167 ohm, at 25 ºC 1885 ohms

Data acquired with ohmmeter

Manual data

Sensor for thermometer in speedometer:

Connection between central pin and ground. With engine at operating temperature, 33,8 ohm, at 25 ° C, 630 ohms

Data acquired with ohmmeter

Manual data

Simulation of high temp water failure with external resistors, for analyzing ECU response.

56 ohm across ECU. Simulates “engine overheating”, in this case, air conditions compressor not operate, and running electrical fan.
