Sadly, since the NERC Act of 2006 ( www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/16/contents ) you CANNOT rely on your old or new OS Maps to go offroading (Green Laning).

You MUST contact the County Council for the area that you intend (intend ids the correct word, as you have to do this BEFORE going out) to visit.

Each County Council has something called a "Definitive Map" - you can go to any County Council office (you need to arrange this in advance as well) to view the "Definitive Map'

If you don't do any of the above, the Ramblers and the Land Owners (aka Farmers) can take your vehicle registration and report you to the Police for driving on an unauthorised road (probably RUPPs and Bridleways since NERC 2006) and if the Police feel you were doing this without any car, they have the authority to impound your car - and they destroy it!!

On a good notes:

1) Each County Council will have something a Rights of Way Officer (ROWO).
2) Most County Council ROWO's are happy to speak or e-mail you, theyt are there for YOU!
3) Most County Council now have legal Green lanes listed on the website.

I hope this helps you to stay out of trouble :)

Jalapeño, IISY?

Some councils even have the current map online!

I'm lucky as Shropshire council are pretty sharp with sign posts and even put maps up showing green lane routes!

Take a print out of the BOAT list with you. If you get challenged you can wave the list in their face.

Might be worth getting the number of the council office that deals with such enquiries and ask the challenger to ring them there and then to confirm that you are allowed on the road. Then watch them back down
