2wd they can be tail happy, and fun in empty carparks
4wd they are fairly unstoppable... I am yet to feel out of control in mine on snow

Four wheel drive will win every time unless its on slicks. I was out playing last night in a battered old fiesta on 135 road tyres with plenty of tread, my mate was out in his sj with a 3 inch lift and 30" saharas, the fiesta was better than the sj in two wheel drive but the sj was loads better in four.

RWD is simply useless really due to the lack of weight in the back.
Ive got Michelin winter tires on mu civic and there ace!
I did watch a vid on utube of a guy in a Z4 on winter tires and he got everwhere in the snow no problems.
Cant beat 4x4 though. Particulary for controlled decents and when braking in the jimny because of the centrally locked diff

Be careful fitting winter tyres.
I was told that you have to fit on all 4 wheels and be the correct size for the vehicle.
If you fit just 2 on the driving wheels, if you have a bump, your insurance might not pay out.
If you fit the wrong size, 4 or 2 tyres, they are classed as a modification and you must inform your insurers again.
Back on topic, rear wheel drive with winter tyres on, had them on my MX5, brilliant in the snow, especially when I wasn't in a rush to get anywhere and could stay out to play.
Back to Jimny, ATs are better than mud tyres as there are more blocks, the more the merrier. You need the snow to stick in the treads, not to be cleared as mud tyres would tend to do.
Then the snow in between the blocks sticks to the snow on the road, giving you grip.
I have winter tyres (4) on my Merc and have been able to get out and about.
But with the directional, 'normal' tyres on, no chance! It just drives from my dry garage into the snow and that's it, stuck. Traction control, stability control kicks in and nothing.
Bit of a pain when the Jim was on the road last time it snowed BUT parked behind the Merc in the garage. BUGGER!!

Thanks all.
Don't think I'll bother with winter tyres for my normal car, considering the age of the car it's not exactly fair to use it in snow and ice anyway! I need to get a Jimny!
However, when I do get my Jimny, it's not likely to be used for hard core off roading, and probably 80% of the time it'll be used on road. So I'd probably go for road tyres of some sort rather than ATs. So road tyres vs ATs, will I see that much difference in snow, mud etc? I imagine ATs would be better, but massively better, or just a bit better?
Also, can people recommend a decent tyre that'll do mainly road (without being too noisy, hard to park, heavy on fuel etc.) but will be competent for limited medium off roading and occasional snow / ice? I think Grabber AT2s / Turbo Saharas might be too much, but I want something a bit grippier than standard road tyres... On standard Jimny steel wheels, this is.
Cheers.
