If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

It is a lot easier with the radiator out, but you can replace the fan belt with it still in, it will feed in through the fan.
As to any damage, just keep an eye on the radiator level, if it stays full and the expansion bottle stays correct it is fine. If it keeps going down despite topping up the head gasket will need replacing and the head skimming due to the overheating.
Fingers crossed that you didn't go far enough to damage it.
