I posted a similar query around nine months ago. I ended up buying a Jimny and I don't regret doing so. If all you've ever driven is shiny new hatchbacks and the like, you'll find the Suzuki slow, vague and jittery. If you've driven cars from the seventies, kit cars or classics, you'll feel much more at home. This is a car that's happy at 55 mph. Accept that, get the driving position right and you can, as I've done, potter about all day. The manual you get with the car helpfully points out that you can't corner in a Jimny any more than you can take a sports car off road. Drive according to that maxim and you'll be fine.
Mine has rust at the chassis welds, in the tool tray and around the seat belt mounts. It's a 03 plate and has had it's first MoT. The guy I take it to is very strict but fair. That's the way I like it because my kids travel in these cars. He was perfectly happy with the Jimny's condition.
Jimnys are economical for 4 x 4 s but thirsty for 1300s. Insurance is low for a 4 x4. But high for a car that prefers not to do 70 mph. I hope I can get my son insured when he passes his test.
I have a midi MPV as my main car. It's an automatic 1.8 but is more economical, faster, accelerates better, is more comfortable, handles better and has more room in it - much more room - than the Suzuki. And yet, I often take the Jimny because it has something indefinable about it. Rowing it through the gears, perched up high, knowing that it'll never fail to get you home you finally realise that people who talk about cars having "character" are telling the truth.
Just don't drive it in a gale. You'll have to lash yourself to the steering wheel.

Not talking you out of it as everyone on here loves their Jimnys, but they definitely have character and it is really pointing out that you shouldn't believe the horror stories pedalled by Clarkson and the psedo cognoscenti who have probably never driven one.
Re reliability a few years ago my daughter wanted to go to France and my son wanted to go surfing in Cornwall so he and my wife went there and daughter and I went to France.
At that point she hadn't had the Jimny very long so it was a good 10 years old,
We travelled from from sunny Carlisle via London and the tunnel and visited the Somme, Monet's garden Normandy Battle fields and Bayeux all in about 6 or 7 days racked up a lot of miles ( or kilometres
) and car was brilliant.
So it will certainly make the journey to work and back
