A skid plate will not reduce your ground clearance as it will only be a half inch clear of your transfer box!

So a flat plate really is a good solution to your standard transfer box woes. If you don't get one you will damage your transfer box as you fear you will.

The bucket type protection really only works for Rocklobsters, which are an SJ transfer box really.

Otherwise, you may as well go the skid plate protection route. They sit levelish with the chassis, so what ground clearance ar you losing?

I have one or two KAP SJ heavy duty transfer box mounts you can have for the price of their postage to see if they will fir on a standard transfer box without lifting it too high. If they work you could order some from KAP without wasting any money, as I have when trying to get them to work with a Rocklobster. I only have one or two as I had to kill one as they won't work with a Rocklobster and it was an experiment.

Alternatively I would look at these: www.jimnybits.co.uk/shop/jimny/jimny-tra...x-guard/prod_22.html

Or I still have my old ASFIR skit plate style guard you can have for £30 + postage as it's no good to me with my Roclobster now and will make a cheaper alternative to that above, and will show you that you don;t lose ground clearance but still protect your transfer box.

My one has been used and has been hit, so don't expact it to look like new, but it will stop the trouble you're having now!

Send me PM if you want to try my KAP transfer box mounts or want to buy my skid plate.
