After finally admitting the awful truth that dad can no longer really get into the defender we have put a deposit on a cherokee it's an 06 at good money from a franchise and seems to be real clean and tidy. Just need to get it up from Yeovil and we will be possessed of some good old American iron, yee haw and all that.

Nice one. I used to own the classic Cherokee and really loved it but it had tiny doors and the power, albeit mostly great to have, was lethal in the winter on ice or snow.
I always wanted another but later model with better door access so I look forward to you telling us what yours is like. ;)

I had a 70s cherokee too. 4.2 litre straight 6, mine was manual, which didn't suit it really, you only ever needed 2,3 & 4 unless towing.
Shocking build quality and body rust, made the Leyland cars of the time look well made & robust. ;)

The Dana axles were excellent, with open hooke joints rather than troublesome ball swivels, and the open C section chassis didn't rust at all. B) Ran beautifully, cavernous inside, I remember collecting roofing sheets flat on the floor in the back.

Mine actually was a RHD conversion, the steering wheel was on a small shaft and worked like a boat with a boxed hy-vo chain running behind the dash to the shortened steering shaft  Wish we had digital camers then, I've only got one picture of the outside on kodak gold

I've always fancied a MB tbh, best pencil one in on the Lottery List

That is nearly a new one :) They were the first with this new fangled "unitary construction" weren't they?

Mine looked like this one:

The bumpers were for bumping with in The Olden Days ;)

The jack was a hi-lift that hooked into a nick in the bumper, and just hauled the body up about 2 feet before the wheel came off the floor.
