I re-taxed my car but forgot to display the tax disc. I drove around for months with an out-of-date disc before a mate spotted it. Never had any problems though.

If a police car with ANPR passes you, they know in seconds whether you are taxed and insured. I got pulled over the first day I got the Jimny because I'd only sorted the insurance that day and it wasn't 'on the system'. Luckily I had the certificate with me. The police car passed me in the opposite direction at about 50mph. As he passed, by the time I could see him in my mirror and he was on the brakes, the ANPR system having already told him I was uninsured. I was pretty impressed to be honest! There's no way you can read a tax disc when passing at those speeds!

So the whole business of putting a little paper disc in the window is already rather irrelevant.

I'm afraid that living in chav-land as I do, it's going to be a big mistake ... not many police cars with ANPR around, occasional special only.

There'll be an increase int the number of untaxed and uninsured vehicles around chav-land, these people stick to estates and back roads, never venturing onto main highways where they could possibly get caught.

Biggest problem will probably be SORN scooters all over the place, I shopped one in my street last year as noticed it didn't have a tax disc ... soon disapperared.

shame they haven't realised what a big mistake this is going to be when it's so obvious to anyone with half a brain cell.

Another very irritating part of this ridiculous new system is that you can't pass on to a new purchaser of your car any 'tax' that is already on it, or indeed when you but a 'new'car it can't be passed on to you. So when the car is sold and the DVLA advised it automatically cancels any tax and issues a refund. Fine but how do you then drive a car back home supposedly with no tax? I guess the reality is you would be very unlucky to be stopped, but that isn't really the point.
Crazy system and I'm really not sure what the advantage is other than having to no longer print tax discs!

suppose the thinking is that "green cars" don't pay road tax anyway,
so none of this will be an issue when all cars more than 900 watts are made ilegal,

You can now renew over the phone so you are covered at the point of collection. You will get a reference number.
