Don't think it will make a jot of difference, if you renew your tax at the post office you no longer have to provide proof of insurance, this is done electronically when they scan the V11 as it reads the "Motor Insurance Database" . No insurance = no tax disc. With the new paperless method it does the same, no insurance (or MOT if required) your money is not taken and you are not taxed. Oddly you still have to show your MOT at the post office.
The main difference is from now on if you see a car without a valid tax disc, you could if you were so inclined report the vehicle, now you just won't know from sight if it's taxed or not.
I can see more and more usage of ANPR and static cameras (a good thing) and traffic wardens will also (probably) get access to both the Motor Insurance Database and the VOSA MOT database so may be taking on a "police style" role as well as giving tickets.

I don't think it's a good idea at all. My opinion might change if I knew that the information that un-taxed cars spotted by ANPR cameras was being passed to the DVLA for them to prosecute but I don't have the faith that it is the case.
I know of someone that has sold a car or scrapped one and it's gone past a camera on the back of a trailer, but of course the camera doesn't know it's on a trailer! That's why the old salvage companies put tape on the registration plates of cars they carry on transporters, that and to stop cloning.
It's not something you hear of all the time though.
Traffic wardens / Police can see at a glance of a car but not if they don't have a disc. If it has no tax what's the betting it has no insurance or MOT!
It smacks of the government saving money in not chasing non payers and reducing DVLA staff to do it but happily taking the money off us mugs that still pay for it. It must cost money to chase the non payers and as they are in the minority at the moment it's not money well spent- except in the view of us mugs that pay!
I wonder what consultation was done with the DVLA / Police - and I don't mean those at the top who don't know what's going on at street level!
Mine will be coming off to give my cars a cleaner look - sorry Dave- yours too! I have not paid online before as I always leave it too late for it to get tome in the post in time but it won't matter now!
