Hi,

My Jimny journey started in 2019 and after 4.5 years of a Gen3 I finally bit the bullet and bought a 2020 Gen4.  I made a lot of small changes to my Gen3 and regret not detailing them in one place, so thought I would start a blog for my Gen4 to see how it changes over the years.

I really enjoyed making or adapting things to make my Gen3 a better car to own and drive.  I am an engineer (electronis) by trade, but I have always enjoyed making small projects in electronics, metal, wood and plastic and when my job became more desk based, instead of spending a good proportion in the workshop making things I turned to my hobbies for things to make.

Now I get to start all over again with a Gen4.

First a few parting photos of my Gen3, it was traded so the dealer wanted my to take it back to standard.

Now my Gen4.

It's a 2020 SZ5 and came to me with a few factory fit options:

- Rear View Camera
- Tow Bar
- Mud flaps
- Locking Wheel kit
- Different Front Grille
- TJM Snorkel
- Spare Wheel Cover
- Rubber mat set
- Rear storage box
- front storage tray round 4WD selector

I get the impression that it's first owner put all these parts on for styling rather than anything else and there are a number of little things I want to change, but more of that in future posts.

Changes already under way

- The SLDA was at full brightness day and night, with no apparent way of dimming it. It turns out that you have to put headlights on main beam to set the night time brightness and as mine was cranked up to the max, it just stays on day mode.

The only way I could find was to put the headlights on, then turn the small dashboard adjuster on the right hand side of the instruments, it took a few goes before it would show anything.

- Staying with SLDA it has sat nav maps from 2018 and I would like something more modern, but also put my MP3 music on there, just need a bigger SD card.

However, the official maps SD cards have the Card ID (CID) set to a propriety value and the SLDA checks this before even trying to load the maps. It seems that most cards cannot have this set as it is set by the manufacturer and cannot be changed.

Some of the old Samsung SD cards can be changed by the user but requires Linux or possible Android and would get a bit involved for most users, they are also now difficult to get hold of.

However, I found a company in Lithunia (zelemar.eu) who sells SD cards that can have a custom CID written in at supply. I have the CID and Maps for 2023 so have ordered a 32GB card, 11GB will be sat nav maps and the rest for MP3.

I will let you know how I get on.

New parts ordered or arrived

- LED fog light and DRL bulbs from the BigJimny store
- Blind spot mirrors that claim to show both front and rear wheels
- Rubber mat (Suzuki) to go over the rear seats (for carrying my dog)
- Stainless M6 Eye bolts and nylon washers to go in the rear
- 32GB SD card with custom CID for sat nav/MP3

Still to sort out

- The spare wheel cover is missing the keys, so I will replace the lock with a cam lock from Screwfix/Toolstation
- The tow bar electrics are 13 pin and my trailer board is 7 pin, but Eurocar parts do an adaptor for £4.99
- The tyres are the original Dueller, clearly they swapped front to rear as the front are only just legal. I still have my Maxxis Worm Drives so they will go swapped from the old Gen3 allows to the Gen4 just as soon as I can.

I suspect the list is going to go on.

Nooo, one careful lady owner, only used to go to church on Sunday and choir practice on Wed evening.  Anyway not Morrison's, perhaps Sainsbury or Waitrose don't you know?

Load area rubber mat

Robin

I have one, and it is great!- it takes the skating rink back to the grippier carpet of the gen 3 and improves on it.
I'm a bit disappointed by the seatbelts bowing it so badly though, I'd have preferred a notch for the belt to go through.

I festooned mine with D-rings in the screw holes too.

The other worthwhile accessory is the rain deflectors for the door windows, so you can crack them open an inch to clear the side windows without the rain coming in

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

The LCV load area mat is good too - it is U-shaped (the LCV load area is slightly deeper) and kicks up over the wheel arches.  I also got the sill protector but the mat covers half of the painted sill anyway, so it's not strictly necessary.

A bit of a busy morning.

- Went for a tow bar electrics adaptor.
- Fitted my Ctek Battery Sense Monitor

- Got my Maxxis tyres changed on to the Gen 4 rims (balanced up fine and felt good driving home)

The Maxxis really look good in comparison to the Dueller H/T.  Even the bloke in the tyre fitting shop thought they looked good, but then he has the same tyre on a L200.
