Does anyone have the tools/ability to measure the temperature at the top of a fully warmed up gearbox.
I know the oils seem rated to 100 C but what should the typical operating temperature be.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationjust as ideas....
if you just want to do occasional measurements what about one of these... get it hot then do the measurement
If your looking for something more 'fitted' then get something like this and find somewhere on the gearbox case to fasten the sensor, or get a hex drain plug, drill part way in and set with epoxy the sensor inside..

A manual gearbox I assume? I have a thermocouple. I think oil temperature should be about 80C but I don't know where I may have got that from.

I have a infra red temp gun and can take a reading of mine if you want 2morro.
(Its a 2013 SZ4)
Wine improves with age.
The older I get the more I like it

Thanks I would appreciate a reading of a warm car, its just a quick bit of ad hoc research. I guess its possible for an Australian car to get hotter although there must be a point at which the oil breaks down.
I also thought it was around 80 degrees but a problem I am working through suggests otherwise.

Hello Martin, is very easy measure the transmission oil temp.
Measure motor oil temp (not in the jimny, in the racing car)
Install the thermomenter inside the car
Install the probe. (replace the filling plug in the gearbox, the drain plug is very expose)
In this photo, replace the motor oil drain plug
Drive the car, and check the transmission oil temp.
in the direct gear (4 in g13bb or 5 in the m13a) the oil temp should be reduced because the transmission efficiency is greater.
In automatic transmission the oil temp is controlled by a thermostat
Cheers
Gustavo
