Bit of a thought experiment following a conversation with a mate.

How possible do we think it would be to custom build a Jimny suspension that has like 2 feet of vertical wheel travel?  I contend that while anything is possible the short wheel base of the Jimny is not conducive to such articulation as the length of the trailing arms will not readily fit in the chassis without overlapping the mounting points. This in turn has implications for propshaft design and diff pinion angles.

Thought I would offer this to the collective for consideration.

think it can be done. see video.
there is a brief photo og radial Arms. at the point where the attach to chassis it can also swivel, to prevent lockup. so it don't just move up an down but can turn a bit.

That's cool but I would say it was more rock crawling than pre runner. We were more thinking about very high speed over undulating terrain than low speed over large obstacles.

The more I think about it the more I think it would have to be a full custom chassis with quite an extended rear section that is wearing something that looks like a Jimny body or cab at least. I just can't see how the Jimny wheel base would accommodate it any other way

Cool though it would be, I can't see it working with the Jimny's short wheel base. If you want to make something work with the Jimny's small footprint you'd be better off looking at side by sides and their fully independent suspension to get the unsprung mass as low as possible.

The other thing is the weight. The body/chassis has to have enough mass relative to the axles to not be unduly distributed by the movement of the axles in order to get the floating effect. Which given the stress on the axles requiring them to be strong and therefore heavy by turns means the chassis will also have to be heavy too. Like I suspected less and less Jimny is going to be left.

A LWB Vitara would be a better starting point. Longer, stronger rear axle, independent front suspension.
I don't think overall weight is so important. It's more to do with the suspension. Check out the price of that before you get the angle grinder out!

Interesting concept and something I have no idea about.

My stupid thinking has the solid axles as problem 1, following by the chassis mods to incorporate the changes required to get rid of this design.
The fact the Jimny body is light is a bonus???
With this in mind why on drop a body on something like this, modified to mate the parts together and with bigger tyres.  Maybe a Hayabusa engine for a bit more speed. (Believe the Jimny 1.3 has some Hayabusa parts!)

Do you need to follow any particular design to qualify as a pre-runner, or can anything go?

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

Lambert.

You ask for our thoughts on a Jimny derived vehicle able to travel across undulating terrain at high speed and then illustrate the concept with a video showing desert racing motors doing just what you ordered.

Why then label them "this sort of silliness".

Is that label for the cars or the drivers?

Roger
