Yes mate it was the switch on the gearbox, luck I had a spare one in the shed, thank you darthloachie and supergaz for you help.

Glad you sorted your reverse light switch. Where I thought I'd blown a shaft it turned out to only be a manual hub that had failed, I could have bodged it easily if I had known it was that 
so now I have been forced to order new shiny AVM hubs, insure and book my Jimny in for a MOT and then tax it ready for SNOW.
